Having owned 3 e36's 2 m3's and a 328 and now owning an e46 325IX I will say that for daily driving the e46 is a bit better, they are more refined in my opinion and the m54 is basicially a better version of the m52 better fuel economy and similar if not more performance. The plan is the right smoking deal on an E36 coupe - either 325is (w/LSD) or M3. that will essentially be only for autox & track days, and just steetable enough to get it to an event. Once car is acquired, gone through, normal essential maintenance sorted through to have a solid starting base - I hear the cooling systems are ticking time bombs The E36 is such a great German design with great engines, good reliability, and a big enough aftermarket to make them viable today.
